More than 40 years ago the Mexican authorities secured the right to the exclusive use of the name “tequila”. In 1974, the Mexican government issued a law stating that only blue agave liquor produced in certain regions of Mexico can be called tequila. The manufacturers who intend to produce tequila must obtain a permission or a license at the Russian government through the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI). In 2012, Mexico filed an application at Rospatent to register the name «tequila» and its Russian-language variant "текила" for mutual protection of national alcohol brands.
