The American Coca-Cola Company, which left the Russian market in 2022, has filed applications to Rospatent for renewal of registration of three trademarks: Coca-Cola, Sprite and Fanta.
Interestingly, Coca-Cola's Russian successor, the «Добрый» (Dobryy) brand, which has occupied the niche of the original product, now holds second place when it comes to sales within Russia. Earlier, the Russian division of Coca-Cola changed its name to ООО "Мултон партнерс" (Multon Partners LLC) and launched production of an analogue of the famous soda called Добрый Cola (Dobryy Cola).
Considering that Coca-Cola trademarks have been withdrawn from the Russian market in 2022, their legal protection may be terminated in 2025, as the Russian legislation provides for the annulment of a trademark in case of not being used for three years.
The very fact of filing applications for the re-registration of trademarks may indicate the return of Coca-Cola to the Russian market, as noted by experts. The Coca-Cola Company's decision to leave Russia has led to the emergence of counterfeit products on the domestic market, for instance, adverts for the wholesale of counterfeit soda appeared on Avito and in a Telegram channel with wholesale offers of food and drinks.
TKM International Consulting notes that the renewal of the Coca-Cola and Starbucks brands in Russia demonstrates their desire to protect their presence in this strategic market. Moreover, this case is not unique, as in May, Starbucks Corporation, which left the Russian market, has also filed applications for registration of trademarks.
